Our position on Climate ChangeClimate change is more than a warming trend. Increasing temperatures will lead to changes in many aspects of weather, such as wind patterns, the amount and type of precipitation, and the types and frequency of severe weather events that may be expected to occur in an area. Such climate change could have far-reaching and/or unpredictable environmental, social and economic consequences. Not all regions of the world will be affected equally by climate change. Low-lying and coastal areas face the risks associated with rising sea levels. Increasing temperatures will cause oceans to expand (water expands as it warms), and will melt glaciers and ice cover over land – ultimately increasing the volume of water in the world's oceans. Scientists estimate that sea levels could rise by an average of 5 cm per decade over the next 100 years. Some estimates suggest that sea levels could rise by almost a full metre by the year 2100. Scientists have also determined that warming will be greater in polar regions than nearer to the equator, and that continental interiors will experience greater warming than coastal areas. This has serious implications for sensitive polar ecosystems, their wild species and the human inhabitants. Interior regions may face more frequent and intense heat waves. Every single one of us has a duty towards our children and grand children to take the matter in our own hands and diminish carbon emissions at home and work place. The Little Bazaar regularly donates to charities that deal with global warming, please do the same by clicking one of the links listed below. You can help in various ways, you can donate money, time or just take part in online petitions. Take action now. What can you do to tackle climate change? Go to http://www.climal.com to learn 5 easy steps you can take to dramatically reduce your greenhouse gas emissions. Climal.com contains a wealth of information and is also a discussion forum where individuals can exchange ideas and debate the problems of climate change and the environment in general. It is a new site and is asking for your input! http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/hottopics/climatechange/aboutexperiment1.shtml Using a technique known as distributed computing, we’re hoping to harness the power of thousands of PCs around the world. If 10,000 people sign up, we’ll be faster than the world’s biggest computer. And we’re hoping to be even better than that (01/10/06: Update - so far over 200,000 people have signed up!) http://www.climatechallenge.gov.uk/get_involved.html Everyone can help tackle climate change. You can start by spreading the word, so more people understand what's happening and why, and what they can do to make a difference. http://www.est.org.uk/ We encourage energy efficiency and the integration of renewable energy sources into the economic fabric of our society. To achieve this we promote the use of cleaner fuels for transport and better insulation and heating efficiency for buildings and homes and champion small-scale renewable energy, such as solar and wind power. http://www.thecarbontrust.co.uk/default.ct Free, practical help and advice for your organisation to save money by reducing energy use. http://www.cat.org.uk/ We offer solutions to some of the most serious challenges facing our planet and the human race, such as climate change, pollution and the waste of precious resources. We demonstrate practical ways of addressing these problems. Leading by example, we aim to show that living more sustainably is not only easy to attain but can provide a better quality of life. Averting a massive environmental disaster is not out of our reach, although if we continue to treat the early signs with apathy, it soon will be. http://www.btcv.org/menus/aboutbtcv.html This charity aims to bring in more volunteers to help with the conservation of our environment in order to involve more people and build up a voluntary workforce. http://www.edenproject.com/ The Eden Project was started by the millennium funding.

They prevent the amount of waste that is going into waste sites and also helping the less fortunate people that cannot afford computers by providing them with reconditioned ones. http://www.iesd.dmu.ac.uk/ As well as focusing on alternative energy uses the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development also focuses on the best way to design buildings so that they do not effect the environment and the best energy out of these buildings so that they are environmentally friendly. http://www.rainforestfoundationuk.org/ The Rainforest Foundation is unique in the sense that they are trying to protect the rainforests although it is not directly affecting the UK. This is a UK based site that has volunteers all over the world trying to prevent the destruction of the rainforests. http://www.worldwildlife.org/ The WWF is mainly well known for trying to prevent the extinction of endangered species but they also carry out a lot of work throughout the organisation. The WWF is a huge charity that consist of a lot of volunteers throughout the world. http://www.rsatrees.org/plantatree Trees are fundamental to our life system on earth and currently the world is using trees at an unsustainable rate. Join the RSA in its anniversary year and help us to restore the spirit of planting. For a donation of £15 the RSA, with its partners, will plant a tree and maintain it until maturity on your behalf. You can select your own location from a list of 30 available planting sites and a certificate will be sent to you to confirm your purchase. |
