CD Replication

What is CD Replication?

CD Replication is the industry standard procedure for manufacturing audio CDs. Whereas CD Duplication uses enhanced CD-R media and 'burns' the data to a heat-sensitive surface, CD Replication actually "presses" the audio onto an aluminium and plastic disc, creating physical pits in the surface. This replicated CD is then covered in a clear plastic layer, to stop the pits collecting dirt and dust.

When is CD Replication Used?

The process of replicating CDs is ideal for orders of 500 units or more. The reason for this is that whilst the setup cost of producing a glass master and formatting the machines for your job is high, the cost of producing each unit is very low. When you are producing 500 CDs or more, the costs of CD Replication are generally lower than the costs of CD Duplication.

What\'s the difference?

CD duplication is the copying of data from one disc to another through the process of burning, especially in large commercial quantities.

Though many people use the terms duplication and replication interchangeably, there are gross differences between the two. Though both processes transfer information onto CDs or DVDs, duplication is the process of burning dots that mimic what we call pits onto a CD surface and is normally undertaken by Duplication Companies. The device which does the burning is called a burner can be inexpensively found on home PCs.

CD replication on the other hand obtains an imprint from a glass master and stamps the data in binary form ontp the disc. In duplication, the duplicate is of the same or inferior quality as the original. No attempt is made to change the quality or constitution of the data transferred. CD Duplication is also cheap to do and therefore the favorite of computer enthusiasts who don\'t have the large budget to do replication.
